Omen Chandi, a popular Indian political leader and influential former chief minister of Kerala, has died at the age of 79
Omen Chandi, who was being treated for cancer, died in a
hospital in Bangalore on the morning of July 18. The news was shared in a
heartfelt Facebook post by his son, Candi Omen, and touched the hearts of many
across the country.
Chandi's political journey began as an activist for the
Kerala Students Union (KSU), the Indian National Congress student group. Born
on October 30, 1943 in Putupalee, Kottayam district, Chandi quickly rose
through the ranks of KSU, becoming a department head of St. George's High
School and later serving as the organization's provincial president.
After completing his pre-university studies at CMS College,
Kottayam and earning his bachelor's degree, Chandy studied economics at his
college in Birchmans, St. He graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree in Law.
His academic background laid a solid foundation for his political career,
equipping him with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively serve his
people.
Chandi's campaign began in 1970 when he was first elected to
the Kerala State Legislative Assembly. Over the course of 50 years, he ran for

Chandi's first term as Chief minister began on 31 August
2004 following his resignation from AK. Anthony. Under his leadership, the

Sabha elections, winning his 16 of his 20 parliamentary constituencies in

within the Congress Party. He served as General Secretary of the All India
